QUESADA ON 2004's 3 FANTASTIC FOURS

With the announcement of the return of Mark Waid and Mike Wieringo to the regular creative duties on Fantastic Four, Marvel EIC Joe Quesada found himself with one too many FF teams. His answer is a simple one, though – in a conversation with Newsarama Quesada outlined 2004’s three FF titles.
First off, on the return of Waid and Wieringo, Quesada’s explanation was simple – Marvel made a really bad decision.
“As I’d said before, we really screwed the pooch on this one,” Quesada told Newsarama. “A week before San Diego, I went out to LA and spoke to Mark personally. I told him that we’d love to have him back, and we were very sorry about the screw-up. People are human, and we screwed up. There was no two ways about it. Although the decision was ours to make, the way we handled it was completely incorrect and inappropriate, and we all knew that.”
In speaking with Newsarama this summer about his then-pending return to Fantastic Four for two or three issues past #508, Waid said: “Joe's heartfelt apology went a long, long, long, long way. Joe, to his credit, was great about coming back to me even before San Diego and explaining that he felt, in retrospect, they'd made a mistake in booting us. He offered us the book back, which was a great gesture.” Click here for more.

CROSSGEN UPDATE: PANNACIO, VILLA GONE; FREELANCERS COURTED, MV CREATIONS

News of change continues to trickle out of CrossGen, with reports of more creators either leaving or at the very least, splitting their time with the company, more business-side departures, and an update from MV Creations, which was published under the CGE imprint.
First, in addition to the individuals named yesterday, Comicon.com's The Pulse is reporting that Senior Vice President/Chief Creative Office, Gina Villa has left the company, along with Senior Vice President/Media & Productions, Tony Pannacio. Both were part of the original management team, while Villa has always been credited as the co-creator of the CrossGen Universe.
In regards to other freelancers, Newsarama has confirmed that Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada, who was in Florida on other, personal matters, had a scheduled meeting with several CrossGen creators who are looking for more work, while a small cadre of creators reportedly called Marvel recently and played “round robin,” with the phone, each creator identifying themselves and making a pitch.
As reported yesterday, DC is reportedly seeking some of CrossGen’s key players as well.Click here for more.

DAREDEVIL LATEST MARVEL MUST HAVE

Last month Marvel offered its first MUST HAVES collection of consecutive issues from one title (VENOM - ULTIMATE
SPIDER-MAN #33-36), and comic shops responded with record orders. Hearing its fans and retailer partners loud
and clear, this month Marvel is pleased to offer the latest low-cost Must Haves compilation, MARVEL MUST HAVES:
DAREDEVIL (JAN035084 D), collecting DAREDEVIL #41-43, the first three chapters of the current critically-acclaimed
"LOWLIFE" story arc.
"Response to the 25-cent DAREDEVIL #41 has been tremendous, with people checking the issue out because of the attention generated by the movie and the USA TODAY review, and then discovering the work of writer Brian Bendis
and artist Alex Maleev," said Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada. "Issue-in, issue-out, DAREDEVIL is one of the best comic books
on the stands of any genre. MARVEL MUST HAVES: DAREDEVIL was created to give new readers just catching on to that fact an opportunity to continue with the story started in issue #41, and with the series as it heads to its
next big story arc, "HARDCORE".
"I'm so excited about this collection because ever since we announced Matt Murdock would be outted as Daredevil by the tabloids, people kept waiting for the trick finish or easy way out," added Brian Bendis. "What these issues illustrate
is that we have no intention of doing anything like that, so I'm thrilled that people are looking for them and want to
continuing following the story!"

Marvelous Makeover

The comic-book company took a beating. But it’s back, flexing big muscles. Who is Daredevil? As a kid he was blinded
by biomedical waste. He later discovered that his other senses were heightened and began developing them into
superhuman abilities. He’s been a second-tier hero for decades, but on Friday, Ben Affleck, in Daredevil’s crimson outfit, will try to put the hero in the big leagues.

AS IT HAPPENS, Daredevil is also a handy metaphor for Marvel Enterprises, the public company that owns Daredevil and 4,700 other comic-book characters. In the ’90s, Marvel was blinded by explosive sales of its comic books to speculators
who believed they were a can’t-miss investment. When that bubble burst, Marvel was forced to develop its other abilities—winning back readers and reaching out to new fans through the big screen. It paid off, and now Marvel seems on top of the world, leaping between rooftops like the mysterious Daredevil.

There’s more to come, too, with two other big-budget Marvel movies hitting theaters by summer. “X-Men 2,” the sequel
to the surprise 2000 hit, arrives in May, followed by “The Hulk” in June. Both films are expected to build on the success of
“Spider-Man,” which grossed $822 million and sparked sales of nearly 2 million Spidey videogames. The movie helped push the
revenue of Marvel and its publishing, licensing and toy divisions to $290 million last year, up from $181 million in 2001.
Marvel’s stock, trading near $4 last fall, is now above $10. “Things are fantastic,” crows Marvel Enterprises CEO Allen Lipson. “I don’t think they could get much better.”
